My dressmaking kit.

My dressmaking kit.

Since i last posted I’ve spent time (and money!) building up a beginners kit. I’ve not gone for the most expensive things to start with as I want to be 100% set on this and it’ll be a way of treating myself in the future.

I started by googling ‘dressmaking beginners kits’ and just reading through a load of different list to get a good gist of things. I found amongst them all a really good website that helped a lot. LINK. They haven’t just got a list of what’s needed but loads of advice and tips.

Essentially the beginners kit is (and where i found mine in brackets):

  • tape measure (out of a cracker over Christmas)
  • needle threaders (Tesco)
  • glass head pins - glass so you can iron over them (Asda)
  • sewing needles (Tesco & my local McColls had an assorted pack for 37p!)
  • fabric scissors/shears (The Range)
  • tailors chalk (Tesco)
  • pencil, rubber, ruler (Tesco)
  • iron and ironing board (already had, think the iron came from Comet)
  • sewing machine (already had, Bhs)
  • seam ripper (Tesco)
  • embroidery scissors (Asda)
  • paper scissors (Tesco)
  • extra bobbins (Tesco)
  • different colours of thread (Tesco)
  • pressing cloth (still looking for this, I’m looking for a plain tea towel but they all seem to have ridges in them)
  • something to put it all in! (an empty toiletry gift box i had for Christmas)

I’ve also decided to subscribe to ‘The Art of Quilting’ magazine. Over 90 issues you get everything you need to make a patchwork quilt. Each issue tells you about the block you can make, how to make it including templates, a little history piece and then how to make another project. I feel like this magazine is going to be able to help teach me how to make lots of different projects and get me used to sewing. Subscribing gets you free gifts too!

I’m not going to set myself too big a target, this is a hobby after all!

Knitting-wise, I want to have made a scarf and be able to read patterns!

Dressmaking-wise, I want to have made something that is wearable. It doesn’t have to be me that it’s wearable on but it would be nice. I also want to be able to do basic repair work e.g. sewing up holes on seams, replacing a zip etc.

And this is my first attempt at knitting. It has got lots of holes in it and I’ve lost a stitch somewhere along the way but it looks like knitting! When I’ve gone wrong it has been because I’ve not been concentrating fully. I just need to keep practising. :)

This is my very cute knitting bag!

This is my sewing machine! I only paid £25 for it so I’m not expecting miracles, but it’s going to get two pieces of fabric joined together and that’s all i need to start with.

I really didn’t keep that up! Hopefully I’m going to change this.

I’ve recently decided to start a couple of new hobbies. Knitting. Dressmaking. And I’d also like to pick up on my card making again.

So I’ve decided I am going to use my tumblr as a way of documenting my progress! Here goes…

…more often on here!

Since i’ve last posted i’ve finished the Kathy Lette book, read four (maybe five) Sookie Stackhouse books and i’ve started The Time Machine.

I must post on tumblr more often.

I must post on tumblr more often.

WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO VISIT ON YOUR PLANET?
tara-louise tara-louise Said:

As many different places as possible! And i’m not ‘travelled’ as it is (i’ve been to Majorca more than 10 years ago!)

One of my dreams is to hire a car one side of the USA and drive to the other, going through as many states as possible. And if this happened to coincide with Comic Con, that would be awesome thank you very much.

Other notable places i’d also like to go to (to name a few):

  • Australia (& Tasmania!)
  • Dubai
  • Italy
  • France
  • Cuba
  • Egypt
  • Japan
  • etc…!

I have just started to read How to Kill your Husband (and other handy household hints) by Kathy Lette.

How to Kill your Husband - Kathy Lette

On chapter four currently, quite good so far!
